Video Game Massacre 5
Saturday, October 1st, 2005

The 5th Massacre went well with the exception that I got 6 hours of sleep 2 days before (3 hours each day). This was due to me testing the games, the network and cleaning the house. I came home from work at around 1:00am on Friday morning, fell asleep around 2:30am, then Liam woke me up around 5:30am. My mom came over to help watch Liam (thanks mom) while I pulled a bunch of weeds away from the walkway out front. Also, she came over so I could set up the competition. I stayed up from 5:30am Friday all the way through 7:30am Saturday morning. I slept until 10:30am on Saturday (only 3 hours!) to set up the rest of the game systems and to clean up the house. Luckily Jim P. and Dave L. came early with a lot of food (thanks guys) and helped me set up the deck. They also went to the store to pick up paper towels and water because in my sleepy stupor I forgot to get these. If I seemed groggy or cranky that day, that is why. A lot of people showed up (18 players and a few spectators) with either food or drinks (thanks everyone). Around 6pm, I had ordered 9 pizzas from Domino's in case anyone was hungry. We had an intermission around this time for an hour. Bill C. was the only one who brought a video game related snack, which won him the Best Video Game Related Snack Award. Fro was the winner this year. He really kicked some ass.... again. My nephew Billy J. took the photos for me while I ran the competition (thanks Billy and good job). I set up a PC hooked to a surround sound receiver and 27 inch TV set in the front room so people could play games while waiting for their turn in the competition. The controls had to be configured, but after that it worked pretty well. The only issue that we had was that the controller for Flat Out did not work for the PC in the front room. For Flat Out we had to then have 3 players compete against each other. In the end, I think everything went well. We'll have more PC LAN games next time since they went over good.

This is the gaming station I set up in the front room. This is where people could play games while standing by for their turn in the competition. This little game station consists of an old 866Mhz Pentium III, 512MB of RAM, Turtle Beach Santa Cruz 5.1 surround card, a 64MB GeForce 3 Ti video card with TV out, an HP Gigabit Ethernet card (for the network games) a cheap (bought on the side of the road for $10) 100 watt surround receiver and cheap 100 watt Sony speakers. I also have a USB adapter that lets you connect 2 PS2 controllers to the PC. This whole set up works very well. This PC is networked with our 3 other PCs in the house. That is Jim P. off to the left playing a game on the MAME arcade emulator. This set up will be used at our Halloween Bash to play music and horror movie clips. I will set it to randomly play the music and video clips all night.

This was one of the games that the standby players played while waiting. This one is on MAME and is called Sunset Riders. I must've sunk at least $5 into this game to beat it when it was popular at the arcade. Kind of a bummer arcades are slowly being wiped out by console systems.

This is Bill C's Pacman cookies. Nice job Bill.

Dave L. brought these. They must've been really good because they were gone before I could have any. Dave also brought a large cheese ball and some crackers. Thanks again.

This is our living room in the front of the house. That's Bill C. on the left, Dave L. in the middle and Brad B. on the right.

Jim P. playing what looks to be Bomberman on the PC (MAME).

That's me watching 4 of the competitors playing a great classic, Warlords for the Atari 2600 (we used the Atari 7800 for it). This game seems to be one of the most popular even though it is the oldest.

This is my nephew Billy's friend Tom.

This is the Bicknell brothers (from left to right: Corey, Brian and Eric). These guys have been to most of the Massacres.

Jim P. and Fro playing Bomberman (I think).

This is our den in which the competition games were played. From left to right: Fro, my nephew Curtis J., Corey B., Brian B. and Jim P. (or at least part of his head).

That's my nephew Billy J. playing a game with Kris B. in the front room.

That's me on the left taking the scores . At that moment Warlords (Atari 2600) was being played.

That's Ed W. in the back and Tom in the foreground. I can't see who else is there though.

From left to right: Jim P., Kris B., Curtis J. and Corey B.  I can't tell what was being played here. I think it may have been Time Splitters 3: Future Perfect for the Playstation 2.

That's Brian B. looking like he's yelling something?

Fernando F. waiting for his turn.

This is our deck. Next year we will probably have a few big cookouts here. I have to put a new coat of stain on it before next Summer.

This is our back yard. There's a lot of room and great for outdoor parties. Liam loves to run around out here.

Kris B. looking like he's caught off guard.

From left to right: Fernando F., Brian B., Tom and Eric B.

Me going on only 3 hours of sleep. I was twitchy, saw swirlies in my peripheral vision and my eyes burned like heck. But hey, I think it was worth it. The following weeks after the competition I got about the same amount of sleep setting things up for the Halloween Bash. After the Halloween Bash, I planned on getting in some normal sleep (7 to 8 hours a day hopefully).

Ed W. (left) and Fro (right).

Fernando F. (left), Jim P. (middle) and Dave L. (right) chilling out in the kitchen.

From left to right: Brad B., Kris. B., Tom, me (far back) and Bill C.

Eric B. hanging out in the kitchen.

From left to right: Fro, Kris B., Fernando F. and Tom watching someone play a PC game (maybe XIII)?

Fro (left) playing against someone in XIII on the old Pentium III while Brad B. (right) looks on. Brad was not feeling well since he had just come up from Florida the night before.

This is our computer, art, exercise and game room. Eric B. (left) is watching Brian B. playing XIII against 3 other people downstairs.

Eric B. watching a game in session.

This is our main PC in the living room. It is a 2.4GHz AMD Athlon 3200 with 1GB of 3200 RAM, a 128MB RAM ATI 9600 XT video card and a Mad Dog 6.1 Digital Entertainer Dolby Surround card. I do most of my video editing, music and sound editing and artwork on this PC.

This is the winners trophy. It may possibly be the best one I have created so far.

This was also with the winners prize. It is an Intellivision emulator built into a controller. All you need to do is hook it to a TV, then you can play 10 different Intellivision games.

This was the losers trophy. I also put a lot of work into this one. This too is one of my best trophy's I have made..... even though it looks like crap.

This was the award I created for the best video game related snack. I drew this between chats and on break while I was at work. When I brought it home, I scanned it, then added color via Photoshop. I was very happy with the way it came out.

This was the evil monkey that Jill and I picked up at a dollar store. This sought after monkey was filled with all the money each participant paid. If I can remember, it was filled with at least $95.

Bill C. won the award for the best video game related snack. This was for his Pac-man cookies.

Bill C. won the losers trophy. Notice the proud smile he has. This was the first time we had someone win two prizes. Way to go Bill!

Bill C. savoring the sweet smell of victory.

Fro won the winners prize. He got the winners trophy, the 10 game Intellivision emulator/controller and all the money along with the evil monkey.

Bill C. and Fro showing off their prizes.

With the hours of work that went into this trophy, Fro was so happy that he decided to eat it. The next morning he was not so happy. At that point he realized that victory can sometimes be very painful in  the end. Good thing I didn't make a 3-tier trophy!

The next competition will probably be in another 2 years. That should be enough time for me to get together a new batch of games and possibly some new players. Hope to see you all there again.
