August 17th has finally come and gone. Our Hunt in the Hills seemed to go very well and luckily it didn't rain ( the night before was one of the worst thunder storms I've seen ). A good amount of people showed up and we had 3 teams participating. The day before ( Aug 16th ) Jill and I were still trying to print the lists out and suddenly we started to run out of ink. We were glad that there was only 3 teams because we almost didn't have enough fliers. When we got on the road ( much later than we thought ) we ran right into the middle of a thunder storm and a massive amount of traffic. Every time a bolt of lightning touched down all the cars would put on their brakes. Anyway, we made it up there in one piece. The storm ended by the time we made it to Ossipee. Once we were in the area Jill & I were scoping Route 16 to look for a spot to put the Gold Sneakers ( the ultimate 200 point item ). Jill stopped on the side of the road and I ran for a ways looking for a prime spot. I placed them under a sign and a guardrail, but just enough so they would shine in the day or at night. They were only within a five mile radius from the campground. The cookout went well and everyone seemed to have a good time. Kelly M actually took over the cooking for me ( thanks ) and made hamburgers, chicken and hotdog's. Scott C had his paintball gun and was letting everybody shoot at targets. They were even doing their own version of skeet shooting with a frisbee. All the participants paid up and signed the waivers, then at 10 minutes of 2 PM we handed out the lists. The first item on the list was to paint one of your team members faces up as a clown. Surprisingly we actually had two teams with clowns. They had to stay that way from 2 PM until 9 PM ( the length of the whole competition ) in order to get the 100 points for that task. Once 2 PM came around everyone was still looking at the lists. Team Palmisano were the first to take off ( really quick ), then Team Bicknell and last was Team McBrine. The first team to come back with something was team Bicknell...... and what they brought back was pretty frikkin nasty. They came back with the first official roadkill of 2002. From what they said it stunk up their car. They threw it in a trash bag and wrapped it with duck tape then put it in a rubber maid container. My brother Tom was the only one with enough guts to cut the bag open and drop it out so I could take a picture. I did get the pictures and I have to say the stink was awful. A little later on Team McBrine showed up and they were all yelling almost as if in a panic. What they brought with them was worse than the other team. Another roadkill.... and this one was a mess. They actually have film footage of them trying to get it ( extremely sick and funny ). Tom did the honors of dropping it out of the bag for pictures again. This time instead of being in one piece, it dropped out of the bag in a messy pile of fur and guts. That one made me almost lose my lunch. All gross things aside, me and Scott C ( he helped out at the campsite while the competition was going on ) went out to see if someone found the Gold Sneakers. When I drove by the area where I placed them they were gone! I was really surprised they were gone already and was thinking that maybe a passer-by might have seen them and took off with them. At the end of the night everyone got back before 9 PM. Jill & I decided to tally the points upon everyone's request in the trailer while everyone got around the camp fire and made smores. The totals at the end of the night were.......
When the tally's were done we presented Team Palmisano with the Hunt in the Hills prize piggy bank and each team member got a $10 Best Buy gift card ( that's all we could afford by the time we set everything up ). Also they are now a permanent fixture in our Hall of Fame! Congratulations!
Jill & I thank all of you that came to this competition ( participants and spectators ). As I said before.... it's you guys that make these events great and memorable. We will have another scavenger hunt in a few years. One more thing.... I CAN FINALLY GET SOME SLEEP!!!!
